Wave washers exhibit uniform spring constants as they are deflected. The true load deflection rate does not start until the waves are evenly loaded, thus wave washers should always be preloaded. As the wave washer is loaded, the outside diameter expands and the inside diameter contracts. Space must be provided for these changes. Good practice is to design the height to be twice the deflection. It is possible to stack wave washers with flat washer in between.

Uses include:

  • Preload for shafts
  • Cushion springs
  • Endplay reduction
  • Reduce vibration
